Stainless appliances show every fingerprint. Carpeted stairs take the heaviest foot traffic in the house. Dirt packs into the edge of each step where a vacuum head cannot reach, so we use a crevice tool there. Ceiling fans get wiped before the floors, because dust on the blades drops onto everything below.

Pollen and red clay end up indoors

Randolph County sits on red clay, and in Archdale it is under a lot of yards and flower beds. After a rain it sticks to shoes and paws and comes straight through the back door. On light carpet or pale grout it leaves an orange stain that sets if it sits. Running a wet mop over clay mud only spreads it around. So we vacuum up the dry clay first and wash the floor after, and the entry mats get shaken out before any of that.

Spring brings the pine pollen. For a few weeks the porch and the car turn yellow green, and every open door lets more of it in. Mildew then forms on the grout and in the ceiling corner over the shower. We scrub it off with our green products and a stiff brush. If it keeps coming back in the same spot, that usually means the room needs more airflow than the fan gives it.

When an Archdale house changes hands, it is empty for the first time in years, and an empty house shows everything. There are dust lines on the floor where the dresser stood and crumbs along every cabinet shelf. The carpet under the beds usually has not been vacuumed since the last move.
